A Little About Myself..

Hi! I'm Amy!

I'm the face of The Sweetest Thing | Body Sugaring and the person you will see when you come in for your appointments.

The Sweetest Thing is located in the heart of Kensington inside District Studios.

I started my career in the beauty industry over 10 years ago when I went to school to become a Professional Aesthetician and Cosmetician.  A couple of years into my aesthetic career I learned the art of Body Sugaring and was immediately hooked! I switched from waxing to sugaring and never looked back.

I moved to Calgary 4 years ago and was shocked to learn the amount of Calgarians who weren't familiar with Body Sugaring.

So here I am to spread the word and share my passion of Body Sugaring! I promise, once you try it you will be hooked too!

What is Body Sugaring?

Body Sugaring is an ancient form of hair removal that has become increasingly popular in western society.

Sugaring is a natural way to remove unwanted hair and is a safe alternative to other methods such as waxing or laser.

The sugar paste is made of sugar, water and lemon juice which is cooked down to form a thick honey-like paste.

Body Sugaring is traditionally done using the ‘ball’ hand technique where the sugar paste is molded onto the skin against the grain of growth. This method allows the sugar to seep below the surface of the skin, insuring the complete extraction of the hair.

The unwanted hair is removed with a quick but gentle flick of the wrist leaving the skin feeling soft to the touch with no sticky residue.

Benefits of Body Sugaring

  • Completely natural product made of sugar, water and lemon juice, which means minimal allergies and unwanted side effects.
  • Safe for even the most sensitive skin types.
  • Can be performed on all pigment types.
  • Less painful then alternative forms of hair removal.
  • Hair is removed with the direction of hair growth, resulting in less. breakage and less ingrown hairs.
  • Does not remove live skin cells, only dead cells from the skin’s surface.
  • Leads to permanent hair reduction over time.
  • The sugar paste is only heated to body temperature which means it will never burn you.
  • Does not use sticks or strips, eliminating the fear of double dipping and cross contamination
  • Is biodegradable and therefore eco-friendly.

Common questions

How long does my hair have to be to get Sugared?

We ask that you grow your hair for two weeks from the last time you shaved. The hair should be about 1/4 of an inch (the length of a grain of rice) This will ensure full extraction of the hair.

Will Sugaring give me ingrown hairs?

NO. Unlike other forms of hair removal, sugaring will actually help get rid of ingrown hairs! That being said, it is still important to follow post Sugaring at home skin care.

Does Sugaring hurt?

I don't want to sugar coat things (pun intended) but your first sugaring treatment will be the most sensitive. Once we get you onto a regular schedule the pain will decrease by half and the hair will become fine and patchy.

Can I get Sugaring done if I am on my menstrual cycle?

YES. A woman's cycle and her sugaring appointments don't always align, that's just life. All we ask is you show up to your appointment with a fresh tampon in and we're good to go.

Can I get Sugared if I am pregnant?

YES. The Sugar paste is natural and chemical free so it's perfectly safe to have sugaring treatments done throughout your pregnancy.. even up to the day before your due!

How long will my Sugaring treatment last?

Everyone is differect, but Sugaring treatments should typically leave your skin feeling silky smooth for 3-4 weeks.

do's + dont's

**Almost as important as the Sugaring itself is making sure you take care of your skin before and after your treatment. Here is a guide to refer back to for your skin care do’s an don’ts..

Before your Sugaring treatment…

So you’ve booked your Sugaring appointment. Here is a couple of tips to lessen the pain and increase the longevity of the silky smooth hair free feeling.

  • First and foremost, make sure you have allowed enough time for your hair to grow to the appropriate length. Typically we ask for your hair to be about 1/4 of an inch (the length of a grain of rice). This will ensure all hair will be removed completely by the root.
  • If you’re really worried about the pain and haven’t experience hair removal before take 1 or 2 Tylenol about 30-40 minutes before your appointment. This will not get rid of the pain but it will help take the edge off.

After your Sugaring treatment…

You’ve just invested time, money and a little discomfort in order to be hair free – so it makes sense to look after it.

What to expect..

It’s normal immediately after your sugaring treatment to be a little red. For sensitive skin types it is normal to be quite red, have prickly heat-type rash or even have the appearance of hives. This should disappear after a few hours and is normally due to a histamine reaction. This does not mean you are allergic to the sugar! Over time, after regular sugaring treatments your skin should adjust and the frequency of the hives and severity of redness will reduce.

What to avoid..

Because Sugaring removes the hair at the root, It leaves your pores exposed, this is why it is important that you keep the area clean and bacteria free.

  • Avoid activities that cause excessive sweating for 24 hours. Sweat, tight clothes and friction can cause irritation of the skin and introduce bacteria into your pores. This can cause ingrown hairs to appear and in some cases infected pores.
  • No sunbathing or tanning beds for at least 12 hours.
  • Have your sugaring done at least the day before you go on holiday, and be liberal with sunscreen on those areas.
  • No swimming in a chlorinated pools, hot tubs or saunas for 24 hours.
  • Avoid touching the area to ensure it remains bacteria free. As the pores close bacteria can get trapped below the skins surface and turn into an infected pore.
  • Use a tea tree oil based products to apply to the area for it’s anti-bacterial qualities. Never apply tea tree directly to the skin, always dilute tea tree in water, lotion, or carrier oil.

3-10 Days after your Sugar

As your skin closes over the follicles, the next consideration is to ensure you prevent ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs can occur when the new baby hair growing in gets trapped under a layer of dry skin. A few simple measures can easily avoid this situation…

  • DO use a soft brush (dry brush) or sugar scrub to gently buff the area every 2-3 days
  • DO use a product like Vanish PFB to roll over the area after showering. This product contains lactic, salicylic and acid which helps ensure dead skin cells are buffed away allowing your hair to grow freely through the skin.
  • DO use a water based moisturizer every day on your newly sugared skin. ALWAYS moisturize on the days you exfoliate, the two go hand-in-hand
